Heat styling isn't going anywhere. But the damage it causes is avoidable — if you know what you're doing.
Most people reach for the straightener or blow dryer without a second thought. And most people also wonder why their hair feels dry, snaps easily, or loses its shine over time. The two things are connected. Heat above 150°C begins to break down the protein bonds inside the hair shaft. Above 200°C — which most styling tools reach easily — the damage is significant and cumulative.
What does heat actually do to hair?
Hair is made of keratin, a protein that gives it strength and elasticity. When you apply high heat repeatedly without protection, you're essentially cooking that protein. The cuticle — the outer protective layer — lifts and cracks. Moisture escapes. The hair becomes porous, brittle, and prone to breakage. It also loses its ability to hold a style, which leads most people to use more heat, which makes things worse.
How do you protect it?
1. Use a heat protectant — every single time
This is non-negotiable. A good serum or spray creates a barrier between the heat and the hair shaft, reducing the temperature the hair actually experiences. The OFF DAYS Smoothening & Illuminating Serum is specifically formulated for this — it protects against UV and heat damage while smoothing the cuticle and adding shine. It's weightless, so it won't make fine hair feel heavy.
2. Lower your tool temperature
Most people use their straightener on the highest setting out of habit. For Indian hair that isn't severely damaged, 160–180°C is enough. Fine or damaged hair needs even less. Invest in a tool with a temperature display so you're not guessing.
3. Never heat-style wet hair
Wet hair is at its most vulnerable. The water inside the shaft turns to steam under heat, which causes the hair to bubble and break from the inside. Always dry your hair at least 80% before using a straightener or curling iron.
4. Give your hair days off
Hence the name. Your hair recovers when you let it. Air-dry when you can, embrace your natural texture, and save the heat for when it actually matters.
The bottom line
Heat damage is real, but it's also preventable. A good serum, a lower temperature, and a little patience go a long way. Your hair will look better styled when it's healthy — and it'll hold that style longer too.
